Oer-IJ climate adaptive

Oer IJ

The Oer-IJ area is a former tidal area in the west of the Netherlands, roughly between Amsterdam and Castricum. It forms a unique landscape and ecological zone that distinguishes itself by its rich soil and water history. Various complex issues are developing in the Oer-IJ area that are of both local and national importance: the urgent consequences of climate change, the intensification of land use and social challenges, such as housing developments, expansion of the energy network and the growing demand for space for recreation and high-quality nature areas. An extensive study has been done for this area into the current landscape and its soil and water system, the current processes and challenges in the landscape and the future developments in the area with all kinds of spatial claims. In addition, possible spatial interventions have been described (particularly on a small and local scale) and advice has been given for the development of a climate-proof landscape. Within this project, 2 documents have been made, part A (the main document) and part B (the background document), and 2 additional cases have been worked on that are not included in the main document.
In collaboration with VE-R and Hydrologic, and commissioned by the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (MRA), 2024/2025
